You may have heard the theories about the Agnew substation that sits just 187 yards from the 49ers practice facility at Levi’s Stadium. A 115-kV hub of transmission infrastructure, quietly humming beside one of the league’s most injury-prone teams.
Some say it’s bad luck. Others blame the turf. A few are pointing to electromagnetic fields and the potential impact on the physical wellbeing of the players. For those of us who spend our working hours focused on power infrastructure, we had to know the truth.
So the team at Orennia did what we do best. We mapped every NFL practice facility against nearby substations. Layered in the injury data. Considered the electromagnetic exposure model. And put the theory to the test.
And by the way, happy April Fools day.
Perception vs. reality sits at the heart of every infrastructure debate. It’s what fuels NIMBYism and turns proximity into perceived risk. In energy, those assumptions carry real consequences. Get the full report to see what the data actually says.
