When it comes to data centers under development, Wyoming is in a league of its own.
Measured in megawatts of capacity per 1,000 people, Wyoming leads all states and provinces with an astonishing 19.2 megawatts per 1,000 residents, nearly four times more than second-place Virginia. That’s thanks largely to Tallgrass and Crusoe’s 10-gigawatt complex now being developed in the state, a massive buildout that dwarfs Wyoming’s small population base.
Virginia, already home to the world’s largest concentration of operational data centers in Data Center Alley, continues to expand as hyperscalers like AWS, Google and Meta add new capacity to meet AI and cloud demand.
Alberta ranks third, driven by new hyperscale developments around Calgary and Edmonton.
Together, these regions highlight how energy availability, land access and attractive regulations are reshaping the map of North America’s digital infrastructure.
