Summer 2026: The UK’s Hottest Summer on Record


With Summer 2026 officially at an end, the UK’s Met Office has come out and declared that it has been the hottest on record since recording began back in 1994.

How hot was the UK’s summer? The country had a mean temperature of 16.5°C, 1.9°C above the 1991–2020 baseline and 0.4°C hotter than last year's record.

Notably, 54 Met Office weather stations broke their all-time daily maximum temperature records this summer, and June alone set a new UK June record of 38.0 degrees Celsius at Lingwood, Norfolk, before August pushed the seasonal peak to 38.1 degrees at Kew Gardens.

Some of the scariest impacts of the heatwaves:

  • Rail operators in the UK imposed heat-related speed restrictions and saw tracks buckle on multiple lines.
  • Over 800 homes in Devon lost power in late May as demand strained the local grid. Blackouts are extremely rare in the UK.
  • Hospitals, including Queen Alexandra in Portsmouth, declared critical incidents when cooling failures knocked out equipment like MRI scanners.
  • On the water side, South East Water issued a hosepipe ban covering 850,000 Kent customers, and England recorded its driest July on record, feeding into drought conditions across nearly three-quarters of the country by August and one of the worst cereal harvests in years.

Why were there five heatwaves, and what does that mean for energy demand and supply?

UK electricity use is normally lower in summer, but 2026 broke that. Fans and air conditioning pushed demand high enough that the National Energy System Operator issued rare summertime Electricity Margin Notices, warnings usually reserved for winter cold snaps.

The high-pressure systems responsible for the heat also suppressed wind speeds, and wind has been Britain's single largest generation source this year. As a result, the periods of highest demand coincided with reduced generation from the cheapest part of the generation mix, forcing NESO to lean harder on gas and imports. Heat also degrades the efficiency of gas plants and the capacity of transmission lines, compounding the squeeze from both ends.
