According to the latest International Energy Agency forecasts, renewables are poised to overtake coal as the world's top electricity source by 2025 or 2026 at the latest.

Renewables’ rapid rise: In 2024, renewable sources accounted for a record 32% of global electricity generation, up from 20% in 2010.Low-carbon power, including nuclear, surpassed 40% of global electricity generation for the first time since the 1940s.

Clean energy is attracting twice as much capital as fossil fuels, with investments hitting $2 trillion in 2024 and an expected $3.3 trillion in overall energy investment in 2025, according to the IEA.

Looking ahead: While the Trump administration has accelerated the end of tax credits for wind and solar, China remains the top builder of new renewables around the world. Earlier this year, Beijing announced it has started to build the world’s largest hydropower dam on the border of Tibet.
