Charted: Each Country’s Share of Nuclear Electricity

Infographic showing what countries are generating nuclear power

Nuclear doesn’t get the same headlines as wind and solar, but it quietly punches above its weight.

Today it makes up about 10% of global electricity and one quarter of the world’s low-carbon power. Unfortunately cost overruns and political baggage have kept it in the “maybe later” bucket for years. But the push for clean electricity paired with load growth from data centers concerns about the reliability from renewables have reignited interest in nuclear.

Zoom out, and the map looks uneven.

  • The US and France are still the biggest nuclear heavyweights, with France pulling 70% of its power from reactors.
  • China, meanwhile, is currently building 30 reactors and adding capacity faster than anyone else.
  • Countries like India, South Korea and the UEA are quietly expanding their fleet, while Bangladesh and Turkey just switched on their first reactors.
  • On the flip side, Germany and Belgium have been bowing out entirely.

The net result is a global split-screen: some countries doubling down with others walking away.
