On Monday, the International Energy Agency told the world just how much electricity we all used to watch Severance. The release of its Global Energy Review captured trends seen in the energy sector across the world.

The highlights:

  • Global demand for energy grew 2.2% last year, the fastest rate seen in the past decade. Demand for all fuels and technologies grew, led by electricity at 4.3%.
  • In terms of the growth in global energy supply, renewables accounted for more than a third of the total growth, followed by natural gas (28%), coal (15%), oil (11%) and nuclear (8%).
  • Low-carbon sources including renewables and nuclear provided 80% of new power supply.

While the IEA’s report underlines the impressive growth of renewables across the world, it highlights that new power is additional to incumbent supplies rather than substitutive.
