Canada is heading to the polls on April 28th to select the next ruling government.

Just as the US was gearing up for its own change in government, Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned at the beginning of 2025, leading to a leadership race for the Liberal Party of Canada. Nine days after being sworn into office, newly appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney called a snap election.

Southern anxieties: Prior to president Trump’s inauguration, polls showed an overwhelming majority favoring the main opposition — the Conservative Party of Canada. But tariffs and the threat of annexing Canada have been a political windfall for the Liberals, who are once again competitive in polls.

On energy

In February, Canadian pollster Angus Reid published a poll breaking down Canadian views on energy by party, amongst other things.

Survey says… there is a strong left-right divide in the country on energy preferences. While the left-leaning Liberals, New Democratic Party and Bloc Québécois all prefer expanding renewables, Conservatives are more prone to supporting the growth of nuclear and fossil fuels.

Hydropower was one area of agreement – nearly all parties had hydroelectricity as the top type of electricity to expand. And expanding coal mining is a minority view in voters aligning with all parties.
