Case Study: Total Addressable Market for RNG

Tailored Analysis for a More Accurate View

A private equity firm was evaluating a renewable natural gas (RNG) portfolio of landfill and dairy projects. The opportunity needed to be reviewed by the firm’s investment committee before they could make a move. To get ready for the presentation to the investment committee, the team worked to identify the total addressable market for RNG across the US. It seemed simple enough; using public sources they found the total headcount of dairy cows by state and the number of landfills. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. The investment committee dug in and asked some tough questions the team didn’t have the data to answer. They asked the team to better evaluate how much of the potential supply was economically viable.

The team turned to Orennia for further insight. Using Orennia’s platform they screened for dairy farms greater than 1000 head of cattle that met a number of other criteria, such as proximity to a natural gas pipeline. The team tailored the analysis further to look at diversion opportunities within 20 miles of each project site that could be quick wins for optimizing the portfolio.

The team went back to the investment committee prepared with a thoughtful analysis that provided an accurate view of the total addressable market. They were ready for further questions with layers of data and insights into what it really meant. With effective insights on hand the investment committee confidently signed off on the deal.
